Stick to the Edges (but watch out for Oregon)
Turns out it's a good thing I left the South and Beth left the middle of the country. Narrow-mindedness reigns supreme there. Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, N. Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Utah and Mississippi all voted to support discrimination against gay marriage. You'd think at least the Southern states would say to themselves "hmmm, we looked like jackasses for making interracial marriage illegal, maybe we should be forward thinking..." but no. And 4 more years of bush. sigh. It's a dark day.

Its a sad day for us all, regardless of sexual orientation or marital status. Even for a straight married guy like myself, its embarassing. One consolation; All the jackassedy voting behavior that upheld Jim Crowe, etc. didn't have much sway on history - human rights are human rights.

right you are scott...a dark day for all forward-thinking people...my workplace today is like a morgue as everyone is just stunned and sad that clearly more than half the country wants things this way...one good thing:
i now have the great word "jackassedy" in my vocabulary. that rocks.
I just want to take a moment and publicly gloat over my better half's word creation. It means a lot to me that he has been captured on your blog as being the author of a new word as he regulary mocks me and torments me with the threat of starting a Brittany dictionary due to my propensity to create words. Ahhh karma.
On other fronts I have to admit I'm flabbergasted by today's elections results, apparently I live in my own world (with my own language) because I can't believe that eleven states (hello Oregon...what happened there?!) voted to ban gay marriage and/or civil unions. I have a lot of issues with the whole goverment involved in telling me who I can marry scenario but most of them were captured by commenters on the Suburban Bliss blog http://www.suburbanbliss.net/ I'm just sorry people can't be adults and that she had to close it down for today.
I did hear one gay rights activist quoted on the radio today as saying "this is only one moment in a lifetime of many moments" and many forward movements often follow the story line of "one step forward, two steps back" so depressing, but positive.
Anyway. Lame.
I am ashamed to live in Ohio. For the record, my husband and I cast our 2 votes for Kerry and against the gay marriage ban. Unfortunately, we needed to vote about 130,000 more times to get our candidate elected and the gay marriage ban passed by about a 2:1 margin. Before we retreat to the west coast, we'll try to infect the locals with a sense of tolerance.

Dont worry, I know there are plenty of you blue folks out there in red-state land. I'm grateful for all the little enclaves of progressive thinking out there. I do hope you have some luck convincing your Ohio fellows to let go of prejudices and take a different look at the world.
Today, I was driving home for lunch when I heard a statement from the "Reagan Wing" of the Washington State Republican Party characterize their stance on gay marriage as, "A Child's Right To Traditional Parents."
What a load of @#@#%$beep!beep! Say what you really mean you jerks!
Then I thought, "Yah, I can go along with that. I support a child's right to two loving parents who also love each other and have made a vow to each other that is legally valid and socially supported. I also support the traditional right of loving, intelligent, and responsible people to adopt children and give them a good life. Who could disagree with that?"
